Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the count of employment gains added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of positions created to the market in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish September’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication once the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are going up, although gradually. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
